Getting Around Hangzhou: Metro, Taxis & Airport Transfers

Travel confidently between Hangzhou’s airport, railway stations, city streets and scenic areas.

Hangzhou is easier to explore when you choose transport for each part of the trip rather than relying on one method throughout. The metro works well for the airport, railway stations and journeys across the city. Walking is usually the most rewarding way to enjoy a selected stretch of West Lake. Buses and scenic-area connections help with places beyond the metro, while taxis or a private transfer can simplify travel with luggage.

For a first visit, a useful approach is metro for longer urban journeys, walking for sightseeing, and a car or bus for the final connection where needed. Around West Lake and Lingyin, traffic controls mean that a car does not always take you to the attraction entrance.

This guide explains how overseas visitors can arrive, pay, navigate stations, use taxis and arrange practical sightseeing journeys without unnecessary transfers.

Hangzhou Transport at a Glance

Transport Particularly useful for What to consider
Metro Airport and station journeys, crossing the city Station access, changes, final walk and the last useful connection
Licensed taxi Hotel transfers and journeys with luggage Metered fare, vehicle space and legal drop-off points
Ride-hailing A booked journey with destination and payment in an app Working account, mobile data and an accurate pickup point
City bus or scenic-area service Final connections to attractions outside the metro Current route, direction, payment and operating hours
Walking Selected West Lake sections and old-town streets Distance, weather, steps and group stamina
Private transfer Families, larger groups, airport arrivals and a planned outing Vehicle size, meeting details, waiting terms and access restrictions
Bicycle A suitable short ride on permitted routes Account setup, local rules, traffic and parking

Journey planning should include the complete trip: getting to the station, waiting, riding, changing and walking to the actual entrance.

Before You Arrive: Five Things to Prepare

1. Save Your Hotel’s Chinese Name and Address

Keep the exact property name, street address, telephone number and entrance location. A hotel brand may have several branches in Hangzhou.

Ask the hotel for a Chinese address card or arrival instructions. Save a screenshot as a backup, along with the map location if your navigation app supports it.

A neighbourhood name or a pin in the middle of the property is less useful than the entrance a driver can reach.

2. Arrange Mobile Data

A working connection helps with maps, ride-hailing, payment codes and messages from a transfer driver.

Check your roaming, eSIM or local SIM arrangements before arrival. Use airport or hotel assistance if needed, but keep a non-app option for your first journey.

3. Set Up and Test a Payment Method

If you plan to use a payment app, complete the required setup and card linking in advance where possible. A successfully linked overseas card does not guarantee that every transport service is enabled.

Keep some renminbi cash available and know how to ask staff for help. Do not make your first transfer depend entirely on a code you have not yet activated.

4. Identify the Correct Arrival Point

Hangzhou has several railway stations. Check the name on your ticket, not just the city name.

For a flight, confirm the arrival terminal and the transport instructions for that terminal. Do not follow an old terminal-specific guide without checking the current signs.

5. Plan the First Journey and One Backup

Choose the main route from your arrival point to the hotel. Also decide what you will do if the flight is late, the metro connection is no longer practical or your payment app fails.

An official taxi queue or a prearranged transfer can be a useful backup to a metro plan.

Hangzhou Airport: Your Main Transfer Options

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is 杭州萧山国际机场, usually identified by the airport code HGH.

The airport has metro access, licensed taxi facilities, ride-hailing pickup areas, coach services and private-transfer arrangements. The best choice depends on your hotel location, luggage, arrival time and willingness to change lines.

Arrival situation A sensible option to compare
Travelling light during operating hours Metro route to the hotel, including the final walk
Family with several bags Licensed taxi or correctly sized private transfer
Late-night arrival Taxi, confirmed transfer or a currently operating late coach
Hotel far from a convenient station Car transfer, or metro followed by a short taxi journey
Connecting to a train Metro or car to the exact railway station, with a substantial buffer

Do not compare only the advertised ride time. Airport procedures and the walk to transport can be significant parts of the journey.

Airport to the City by Metro

Lines 1, 7 and 19 serve the airport. Each can be useful for a different destination.

Choosing the Line

Line A useful role in a visitor itinerary
Line 1 A direct route through several central stations, including Longxiangqiao, without needing an airport-to-city change for those stops
Line 7 A useful option towards Wushan Square and parts of the southern/river-side city
Line 19 A faster cross-city corridor linking the airport area with the East Railway Station area, West Lake Cultural Square and Hangzhou West Railway Station

Choose using your hotel’s exact location. A line with a faster ride can still leave a longer walk or a more awkward change.

West Lake Cultural Square is not the West Lake shoreline. It is a city station and interchange; use the actual lake destination when planning the next stage.

Example: Airport to the Eastern Side of West Lake

For a hotel near Longxiangqiao, compare:

  • Line 1 directly to Longxiangqiao, followed by the hotel walk.
  • Line 19 to West Lake Cultural Square, then Line 1, followed by the hotel walk.

The best choice depends on waiting time, the change and luggage as well as time on the train. A direct journey can be comfortable even if another route has a shorter scheduled ride.

Example: Airport to the Wushan and Southern Old-Town Area

Line 7 to Wushan Square — 吴山广场 is a route to investigate for accommodation around that part of the city. Check the walking distance and suitable station exit for your actual hotel.

A hotel described as “near West Lake” may still be some distance from this station.

Example: Airport to Hangzhou East Railway Station

Line 19 serves East Railway Station (East Square) — 火车东站(东广场). Follow signs through the railway hub to the correct departure area.

Allow time for that walk and railway procedures. The metro arrival is not the same moment as reaching your train’s boarding gate.

Step by Step

  1. Complete arrival procedures and collect luggage.
  2. Follow current signs for the metro or Transportation Center.
  3. Check the route to your exact destination, including any change.
  4. Obtain a ticket or activate the appropriate metro ride code.
  5. Follow the security and gate instructions.
  6. Check the platform direction and intended stop before boarding.
  7. Keep your ticket or payment method available for exit.
  8. Use the correct exit for the final walk or vehicle connection.

Use lifts when travelling with larger luggage. A station may have several exits, and the closest one to the hotel may not be the exit with a lift.

First and Last Trains

Check the departure for the line and direction you need. Airport-station opening hours alone do not prove that a train is still available to complete your route.

If your journey includes a change, check the last useful connection as well as the first train you intend to board. Allow for immigration, baggage collection and walking before deciding whether the metro remains practical.

Avoid planning a late arrival around catching the final train by a few minutes.

Airport Taxis

A licensed airport taxi is a straightforward option when you want to reach a hotel without changing transport.

Follow the signs to the official taxi queue and wait for staff direction. The airport currently lists a Terminal 3 pickup outside Arrival Gate 14 and a Terminal 4 pickup on the connection to the Transportation Center at level F1. Use the current signs if arrangements have changed.

Show the hotel’s Chinese address and confirm the accessible entrance. For an ordinary in-area taxi journey, pay according to the meter and ask for a receipt. Clarify any applicable tolls or additional charges if you are uncertain.

Do not assume the driver speaks English or that a foreign bank card can be inserted into a card terminal. Confirm a workable payment method before departing.

Luggage and Group Size

An ordinary taxi may not have enough boot space for several large suitcases. Ask the dispatcher or compare a larger prebooked vehicle.

Count both passengers and luggage when selecting a vehicle. A nominal seating capacity does not guarantee enough space for your bags.

Airport Taxi Cost

The fare depends on the destination, route, traffic and applicable charges. Use a current estimate to budget, then follow the licensed taxi’s fare arrangement.

There is no single airport-to-“West Lake” fare: the east shore, a hillside guesthouse and a hotel south of the lake involve different journeys.

Airport Ride-Hailing

Ride-hailing can work well if your account, payment and mobile data are ready. The main practical challenge is finding the designated pickup point.

The airport publishes ride-hailing areas at the Transportation Center’s B2 level, associated with elevator halls 3 and 4. Check the app’s current instructions and terminal signs; do not wait in the taxi queue for an app-booked vehicle.

Before confirming the booking:

  • Check the exact hotel branch and entrance.
  • Choose a vehicle that fits your group and luggage.
  • Read the pickup instructions and fare terms.
  • Keep the app available for driver messages.

Match the vehicle and registration shown in the app before boarding. If you and the driver are at different pickup areas, clarify the location rather than moving between levels without a plan.

A live app estimate may change with demand. Confirm what the selected product includes and whether tolls or other charges are handled separately.

Private Airport Transfers

A prearranged transfer is useful for families, larger groups, first-time arrivals or guests staying somewhere less convenient for the metro.

Confirm the details before travel:

Detail What to agree
Flight Flight number, date and scheduled arrival
Meeting Terminal, precise meeting point and how to identify the driver
Contact A working contact method if the flight or arrival procedure changes
Vehicle Passenger and luggage capacity; child-seat needs where relevant
Waiting Included waiting time and delayed-flight arrangements
Price Tolls, parking, waiting and any other inclusions
Destination Exact property, accessible entrance and possible final walk

A transfer should simplify the journey. Clear written arrival instructions matter more than a general promise of “pickup at the airport.”

For a scenic-area hotel, ask whether traffic controls can affect access. A booked car cannot override restricted roads.

Airport Coaches and Late Arrivals

An airport coach can be worth comparing when its actual stop and departure suit your accommodation.

Check the current route, operating period, ticket procedure and final stop. Services can change, and an older daytime route description may not match the coach running after a late flight.

Ask airport transport staff which service is operating and how far its stop is from your hotel. Include that final connection before choosing it because of the fare alone.

A Practical Late-Arrival Plan

After a late arrival, confirm what is still operating rather than assuming the metro runs all night. If the onward rail connection is no longer useful, use the official taxi service or your confirmed transfer.

Tell the hotel your expected late arrival time and save its entrance instructions. A simple direct journey may be preferable after a long flight, particularly with children.

The airport’s Terminal 4 international service centre can help with visitor services, including payment and connectivity matters, when available. Check its operating arrangements rather than making a late transfer depend on it being open.

Hangzhou’s Railway Stations: Choose the Correct One

Railway station Chinese name What visitors should know
Hangzhou East 杭州东站 A major railway hub with several metro connections and substantial internal walking
Hangzhou Railway Station 杭州站 Also commonly referred to as Chengzhan; a distinct station closer to the older central city
Hangzhou West 杭州西站 A separate hub in the western city, with a longer onward journey for many old-town hotels
Hangzhou South 杭州南站 In Xiaoshan; different from Hangzhou East and Hangzhou Railway Station

Check your booked train’s exact station in both languages. “Hangzhou Station” should not be used as a casual label for all of them.

Arriving at Hangzhou East

Follow signs from railway arrivals to the metro, official taxi queue or the relevant pickup area.

The metro stops East Railway Station — 火车东站 and East Railway Station (East Square) — 火车东站(东广场) serve different parts of the same hub. Lines 1 and 4 use the former; Lines 6 and 19 use the latter.

Walking between these areas takes time. Follow the hub’s signs and the current transfer procedure rather than treating every line as a platform immediately beside railway arrivals.

For the eastern lakefront, Line 1 to Longxiangqiao is a useful route to compare with a taxi to your hotel. For the airport, look specifically for Line 19 and its East Square station.

Arriving at Hangzhou Railway Station

The metro station name is Chengzhan — 城站. Lines 1 and 5 provide useful city connections.

Check the route to your hotel, especially if staying in the southern old-town area. A short road transfer may be simpler than a metro change followed by a long luggage walk.

Arriving at Hangzhou West

Lines 3 and 19 provide onward metro options. Plan from Hangzhou West, not Hangzhou East, when calculating your hotel transfer.

A train that is convenient on the railway leg may still leave a longer city transfer. Compare the complete journey before choosing between arrivals.

Arriving at Hangzhou South

Use the exact station and its Line 5 connection when planning. Do not assume it has the same convenience for a West Lake hotel as Chengzhan.

Departing by Train

Allow for the full hotel-to-boarding process: travel, the correct entrance, security or other required checks, and reaching the gate before boarding closes.

Keep the original passport used for your railway booking available. Railway procedures are separate from ordinary metro travel.

A metro arrival at a station does not mean you are ready to board the train.

How to Use the Hangzhou Metro

Read the Route in Three Parts

Identify the line, direction and destination station. Then check the exit for the final walk.

The direction is usually shown by a terminus or destination along the route. At the airport, do not assume the airport itself is the terminus of every line; check the stop sequence and get off at the correct station.

For a branch or service variation, read the train destination rather than relying only on the line number.

Buying a Single-Journey Ticket

At the station, use an available ticket machine or ask the service desk for help. Select the destination and number of passengers, then follow the payment options displayed.

If you want to pay cash and the machine is unsuitable, ask staff for the current cash purchase procedure. Keep small renminbi notes available rather than relying on every machine to accept every denomination.

Follow the ticket’s entry and exit instructions. Physical tickets and QR tickets can use different validation methods, and some physical tickets are collected on exit.

Retain the ticket until the journey is complete.

Using a Mobile Ride Code

In an app supporting Hangzhou transport, select the appropriate city and metro service, then follow its activation and payment steps.

A normal merchant payment code is not necessarily a metro entry code. Check the label before holding it at the gate reader.

Use the same ticket or account for entry and exit. If you switch accounts or payment methods during the journey, ask staff to resolve the record rather than repeatedly trying different codes.

Keep enough battery and data to display a valid code when needed. A saved screenshot may not substitute for a live ride code.

Overseas Cards and Mobile Payments

Card linking, wallet payment and direct bank-card tapping at a gate are different services. Do not assume an overseas card works at the gate simply because it works for another payment in China.

Check the supported option for your card, app and station. If the intended method fails, use a staffed ticket-purchase route rather than spending the start of your trip troubleshooting at the barrier.

Children and other passengers may need their own ticket or a supported companion procedure. Ask staff how to handle your group and any concession eligibility.

Security and Station Movement

Follow the station’s current checks and signs. Keep bags organised and avoid blocking the gate while searching for a ticket.

Large hubs and interchanges can involve lengthy walks. Choose a slightly longer direct route if it is more comfortable with luggage or limited mobility.

If Something Goes Wrong

If the gate will not open, the fare record is incomplete or you miss your stop, speak to station staff. Show the intended destination and payment record where useful.

For a wrong-direction train, leave at a suitable station and follow the correct platform signs. Check with staff if changing requires exiting the paid area.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing Within the City

Licensed Taxis

Use an official queue or a licensed available taxi at a legal stopping place. Show the Chinese address and confirm the entrance or drop-off point.

For an ordinary city trip, expect the meter-based arrangement. Ask about payment before departure if you do not have a working mobile wallet, and keep a receipt when possible.

A foreign card terminal should not be assumed. Carry a practical backup payment method.

Ride-Hailing

A ride-hailing booking can make the destination clearer because it is entered in the app. Check the property branch, road side and pickup pin carefully.

Select a spot the driver can reach and stop at legally. A pin beside the water or inside a pedestrian street may be unsuitable.

Use the app’s available messaging or translation functions if needed, and confirm the vehicle before boarding.

Choosing a Pickup Point

Around stations and scenic areas, dedicated pickup zones are often more useful than the closest map pin. Follow the current site instructions.

At a busy lakefront location, walk to an appropriate accessible road if safe and practical. Do not wait for a driver in a restricted lane simply because the attraction name appears as a destination.

When a Car Is Not the Fastest Choice

Traffic can slow journeys around the lake, particularly during weekends and holidays. Compare the whole trip with walking, a metro connection or a scenic-area bus.

A short map distance does not guarantee a short car journey, and a car can still leave a final walk.

Aerial view of West Lake in Hangzhou
Choose a specific part of West Lake before planning your transport.

Getting Around West Lake

West Lake is a large sightseeing area. Choose a specific section or attraction rather than navigating to a single generic “West Lake” point.

Eastern Shore

Longxiangqiao — 龙翔桥, on Line 1, is a useful access point for the central eastern lakefront. Check the exit and walk for your actual destination.

Do not assume it is equally convenient for the western shore, a temple in the hills or a hotel south of the lake.

Southern Lake and Old-Town Area

Wushan Square — 吴山广场, on Line 7, can be useful for the southern old-town area and onward travel towards parts of the lake.

Calculate the walk or bus connection for the attraction you want. A station serving the area is not necessarily at the entrance.

Western Shore and Hillside Attractions

These often need a bus, scenic-area service or road connection after the metro. Follow the current route and traffic arrangements.

Plan your return as well as your arrival, particularly if you are finishing away from the main eastern lakefront.

Walk a Section Rather Than the Entire Lake

For a first visit, choose a manageable route with a clear endpoint and a break. A map can make an extended lake circuit look more modest than it feels in summer heat or with children.

If you use a boat, check where it finishes before deciding how you will return. Island sightseeing and a transport-style crossing can have different ticket and return arrangements.

Scenic-Area Traffic Controls

Road access around West Lake can change with season, day and visitor numbers. A private vehicle, taxi and organised coach may face different restrictions.

Use the current notices and on-site instructions. A metro-plus-bus plan can be more predictable than attempting to drive directly to a crowded attraction.

Getting to Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak

Lingyin is beyond a straightforward lakefront metro walk. Plan the final connection and allow time for the approach to the visitor entrance.

Metro Plus Bus

A practical approach is to reach a suitable city interchange, then take the currently operating bus or scenic-area connection towards Lingyin.

For example, the published visitor guidance identifies Chengzhan with Bus 7, and Huanglong Sports Center with an onward Lingyin connection, as options to investigate. Check the actual boarding stop, direction and operating service for your date.

The most convenient choice depends on where you start. There is no need to travel to a famous interchange if a nearer suitable connection serves your route.

Taxis Require Particular Care

Published arrangements introduced from December 2025 direct taxi and ride-hailing visitors to transfer points such as 608 Xixi Road — 西溪路608号 or Xiaoyawu — 小牙坞, with onward bus connections. Day-specific controls can vary; confirm the current arrangement before booking.

Do not assume a taxi or privately arranged car can reach the temple gate. Ask your hotel or driver to confirm the legal drop-off and final connection.

The Return Journey

Use the operating bus connection to leave the restricted area before arranging the onward taxi where required. Check the location where the driver can meet you.

Allow a buffer before a timed activity or train. The visit ends at the attraction, but your onward journey may still involve walking, waiting and another connection.

Temple admission and reservation procedures are separate from transport. Arrange those through the current visitor channel.

Getting to Longjing and Other Tea Villages

A tea-village visit requires a more precise destination than “Longjing.” The village, a café, a workshop and a particular walking route can have different arrival points.

Choose the Destination First

Confirm the address of any booked tea experience. Ask the host which drop-off point and approach are best, especially if the location is on a hillside or narrow lane.

Check whether the visit involves steps or uphill walking and how much luggage, if any, you should bring.

Bus, Taxi or Private Transport?

A current bus route can be economical if it serves your intended village and return time. A taxi can simplify one stage but still leave a walk and may be harder to arrange from a quieter location.

For a day combining a tea village with several other places, a planned vehicle can be convenient. Confirm legal access and the meeting point rather than assuming door-to-door service everywhere.

Arrange the Return

Save the return stop or agree on the pickup time before beginning the visit. A hillside walk should not end with uncertainty about the last bus or available car.

Avoid combining distant tea areas simply because they appear under the same broad “West Lake tea” description. Select the experience that fits your interests and transport plan.

City Buses and Scenic-Area Connections

Buses fill important gaps where the metro does not reach the attraction entrance.

Use a current map or official service information to identify:

  • The correct stop and road side.
  • The route number or special-service name.
  • The travel direction and destination stop.
  • The operating hours and any seasonal limits.
  • The payment method and fare arrangement.

Ordinary bus services and scenic-area shuttles may have different ticket or boarding procedures. Ask staff if uncertain.

If paying cash, confirm the fare and change arrangements before boarding. If using a ride code, select the bus service rather than assuming the metro code is interchangeable.

Save the Chinese destination name and follow the stop announcements or live route display where available. Crowded buses and unfamiliar stops are easier to manage when you know where you are getting off.

Walking and Cycling

Walking

Walking is useful for the eastern lakefront, selected causeway routes and old-town streets. Break the day into manageable sections with rest stops.

Consider weather, shade, toilets and the route’s surfaces. A short distance on a map may involve a crowded path, steps or a less convenient road crossing.

Keep the final walk from a station in mind when choosing accommodation and transport with luggage.

Cycling

Cycling can work on an appropriate permitted route, but check the path rules and parking arrangements. Do not assume bicycles are allowed on every causeway, promenade or pedestrian street.

A shared-bike service may require account activation and an available payment method. Test the setup before making it essential to the day.

Use a manageable route that does not end far from your next transport connection. For a first visit with children or limited cycling confidence, walking and public transport may be simpler.

Families, Older Travellers and Access Needs

Choose transport around the group’s needs as well as the fare.

For families, check passenger and luggage capacity, child-seat availability for a booked vehicle, and the walk between pickup points and entrances. A larger vehicle should be reserved explicitly rather than assumed.

For older travellers or anyone with limited mobility, identify lifts, accessible station exits and the final approach to the hotel or attraction. A metro station with a lift does not guarantee a step-free route beyond the exit.

Explain your needs to the hotel or transfer provider before arrival. Around restricted scenic areas, ask whether the final bus connection and visitor approach are suitable.

Build in seating and rest breaks. An extra transfer saved can be worth more than a small difference in fare.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing Hangzhou East, West, South and Hangzhou Railway Station.
  • Treating the East Square metro stop as identical to every other platform in the East Railway Station hub.
  • Assuming West Lake Cultural Square is beside the lake.
  • Looking only at train ride time rather than the full transfer.
  • Using a merchant payment code at a metro gate.
  • Depending on an untested app or overseas-card tap.
  • Waiting for a ride-hailing car in the airport taxi queue.
  • Expecting a car to reach the Lingyin gate despite traffic controls.
  • Booking an ordinary vehicle without checking luggage capacity.
  • Planning around the last train without checking the final interchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the metro a good option for overseas visitors?

Yes, especially for longer city journeys and airport or station connections. Check the route, payment method, exits and final walk before travelling.

Which metro lines serve Hangzhou airport?

Lines 1, 7 and 19 serve the airport. Choose according to your destination and the whole journey rather than assuming one is best for every hotel.

Which airport route is best for West Lake?

It depends on which part of the lake and where you stay. For Longxiangqiao, compare direct Line 1 with Line 19 followed by Line 1. For the southern old-town area, investigate Line 7 to Wushan Square.

Is West Lake Cultural Square on the lakefront?

No. It is a city interchange and destination in its own right. Plan the onward connection to the lake location you actually want.

Does Line 19 connect the airport and Hangzhou East?

Yes, via East Railway Station (East Square). Allow time to walk through the railway hub and complete the required departure procedures.

Can you use an overseas bank card directly at metro gates?

Do not assume so. Direct card tapping, wallet payment and app ride codes are different services. Check current support or obtain a ticket through the available purchase channel.

Can you travel without a mobile payment app?

Plan to use an available ticket-purchase method and ask station staff for help where necessary. Keep renminbi cash and confirm taxi payment before departing.

Are airport taxis and ride-hailing cars collected in the same place?

They have different pickup arrangements. Follow the signs for a licensed taxi or the current app instructions for a booked vehicle.

Can a taxi take you directly to Lingyin Temple?

Do not assume direct gate access. Published arrangements require taxi and ride-hailing connections through designated transfer points; confirm the current drop-off and bus stage for your date.

Is walking around all of West Lake necessary?

No. Choose a section that suits your time and stamina, with a clear endpoint and onward connection.

Should you hire a car for every day in Hangzhou?

Many city stays work well with a mix of metro, walking and selected road journeys. A planned vehicle is more useful for luggage, a group or a day with several less convenient destinations.

What is best after a late flight?

Check the services still operating and the last usable metro connection. An official taxi or confirmed transfer can simplify a late hotel arrival.

How much time should you allow for an airport or train departure?

Work backwards from the airline or railway’s requirements, then add the complete ground journey and a buffer. Do not use the transport ride time alone as your departure allowance.

Plan Your Hangzhou Journeys

Choose the exact destination first, then compare the complete journey. A station beside one part of West Lake may be unhelpful for another, and a car booking may still require a scenic-area transfer.

Prepare the hotel’s Chinese address, test payment and navigation, and keep a practical backup for arrival. Once those details are in place, a mix of metro, walking and selected buses or cars gives you flexibility across a Hangzhou stay.
