Hangzhou’s modern riverfront makes a rewarding change of pace after a day beside West Lake. In Qianjiang New City, broad public spaces lead towards the Qiantang River, while sculptural buildings and glass towers give the skyline a very different character. Arrive before dusk and stay as the lights come on: the gradual shift from daylight to evening is as much a reason to visit as any scheduled show.
The most recognisable pairing is Hangzhou International Conference Centre and Hangzhou Grand Theatre. The conference centre’s golden sphere suggests the sun, while the theatre’s sweeping silver form evokes a crescent moon. Look at them first from the surrounding public spaces, then change position as you walk towards the river. Their contrasting shapes are easier to appreciate when you leave room around them in the frame.
The Civic Centre adds another architectural stop nearby. An exterior look fits naturally into this walk; a visit to the Hangzhou City Planning Exhibition Hall is a separate indoor option. If the exhibition interests you, check its current opening arrangements and admission requirements before building it into an afternoon itinerary.
City Balcony is a public riverfront space in the heart of Qianjiang New City, on the north bank of the Qiantang River. Here the emphasis changes from individual buildings to the width of the river and the skyline across it. It is a good place to pause rather than rush through a checklist.
For photographs, try both directions: look across the water, then turn back towards the buildings behind the promenade. A close view of the golden sphere tells a different story from a wider river scene. Take care around steps and busy pedestrian areas, and keep walking routes clear while filming.
Plan your arrival around the actual sunset time for your travel date. Late-afternoon light can soften the buildings before the sky darkens, but weather and visibility will shape the experience. A colourful sunset is a possibility rather than a promise; an overcast evening can still offer an atmospheric river walk.
Qianjiang New City’s coordinated skyline light show is a scheduled display, distinct from the ordinary illumination of individual buildings. City Balcony’s main viewing platform is an established place to watch it up close. For a broad view of the north-bank skyline, the opposite bank offers a different perspective; visiting that side requires a separate journey across the river.
Schedule checked on 24 October 2026: the announcement effective from 8 October lists a 19:30 show daily, with an additional 18:30 show on Fridays and Saturdays. These are Hangzhou local times. Weather, maintenance, special events and temporary controls can change or cancel a performance, so confirm the latest official notice for your exact visit date.
The musical fountain has its own timetable. Do not assume that a fountain performance, illuminated buildings and the skyline show all begin together. If a particular display is the main reason for your trip, organise the rest of the evening around its confirmed arrangements.
Start around the Civic Centre, continue through the public spaces near the conference centre and Grand Theatre, then head to City Balcony. Leave a generous pause for river views and the changing light. On a show evening, return to your chosen viewing position before the scheduled start, allowing for crowds and any directions from staff.
Finish with dinner at Raffles City Hangzhou or another nearby restaurant. Raffles City is in Qianjiang New City near the Civic Centre and the two landmark buildings, making it a practical option to consider before or after the waterfront. Check the restaurant you want rather than relying on a late arrival to find every venue open.
This is a suggested sequence rather than a timed tour. Shorten it in rain, take an indoor break in hot weather, or move dinner earlier when travelling with children. The route works best when the waterfront is the centrepiece and the other stops support it.
By metro: Citizen Center station serves Lines 4 and 7. Use current station signs and a live map for the public spaces or viewing platform you want; do not rely on a single exit number remaining the best choice during construction or crowd controls.
Admission: the outdoor riverfront walk is free. Theatre performances, dining, exhibitions with booking requirements and any separately arranged river cruise should be checked on their own terms. A boat trip is an optional addition, not part of this walking route.
What to bring: comfortable shoes, a charged phone and a layer for the river breeze are useful. Keep children close to you near the river, remain behind barriers and follow local instructions. Tide viewing needs its own forecast and a designated safe place; an evening stroll should never turn into a walk onto exposed riverbanks.
Qianjiang New City is especially satisfying when you give it time to change. Stay long enough to see the river, the public spaces and the skyline in more than one light, and the evening has a clear rhythm even if a scheduled performance cannot go ahead.
