What Is the Best Way to Visit West Lake?
For most first-time visitors, we recommend one selected lakeside walk, an optional boat trip and a proper meal or rest break. Allow half a day for a satisfying introduction, or a full day if you want an island visit and another section of the shore. Start around Hubin for convenience, choose Bai Causeway for a shorter classic walk, or explore Su Causeway if you enjoy a longer outing. Decide where you want to finish before choosing a boat ticket: a scenic ride is more useful when its landing point fits the rest of your day.

West Lake, Hangzhou.
West Lake at a Glance
| Planning question | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Time for a first visit | Half a day; a full day for a broader experience |
| Simplest starting area | Hubin, on the eastern shore |
| Classic shorter walk | Broken Bridge, Bai Causeway and a section of Gushan |
| Longer causeway walk | Su Causeway, with an onward plan at the opposite end |
| Less-walking option | A short lakeside visit plus a suitable boat or sightseeing service |
| Boat decision | Choose between an island visit, sightseeing ride, transport segment or small-boat experience |
| Admission | Public lakeside access is generally free; paid attractions and boat services are separate |
| Main planning mistake | Attempting every viewpoint, causeway and island in one hurried circuit |
Understand the Lake Before Choosing Your Route
West Lake is part of Hangzhou itself. The eastern shore meets the city, while hills frame much of the other sides. Causeways, gardens, islands and historic landmarks divide the landscape into experiences that feel quite different from one another.
UNESCO recognises West Lake as a cultural landscape shaped through centuries of planting, building and landscape design. The causeways and gardens help explain its character as much as the open water.
For practical planning, think in four areas:
| Area | What it offers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| East: Hubin | Lake views beside the city | A convenient introduction or easy return visit |
| North: Broken Bridge, Bai Causeway and Gushan | A classic causeway-and-garden outing | Choose a focused walk rather than adding every nearby attraction |
| West: Su Causeway and western gardens | Longer walks, planted landscapes and different water views | Plan your finish and onward transport before setting off |
| South and southeast | Lakeside parks, views towards Leifeng Pagoda and access to southern city districts | Combine a selected walk with lunch or historic-street sightseeing |
“West Lake” is too broad a destination for a useful taxi instruction. Save the name of your actual starting point in Chinese and confirm where vehicles can stop.
Useful Place Names for Maps and Drivers
Use these names to identify your intended start or finish. A saved place name does not establish that vehicles can stop directly beside it; check the permitted arrival point.

How Much Time Do You Need?
One or Two Hours
Choose a short section around Hubin or part of Bai Causeway. This is enough to enjoy the waterfront and take a break, but it leaves limited room for boarding queues or an island visit.
If you have a train connection, count the journey back to the station separately. Do not use your last available hour to start a boat outing with an uncertain return time.
Half a Day
Half a day suits one of the walking routes below, lunch and an optional activity. A shorter walk and an island outing can also work if the boat arrangements and queues fit your time.
A Full Day
With a full day, combine two different perspectives: perhaps Bai Causeway in the morning, an island visit, then a selected southern-shore stop. Leave a proper break between them.
You can also enjoy the lake in two shorter visits during a Hangzhou stay. Returning in different light often adds more than extending one walk until everyone is tired.
Four West Lake Walking Routes
These are suggested self-guided routes, not measured trails. Distances are approximate planning estimates for the named sequence, with modest sightseeing detours. Check your actual path on a current map; hotel access, garden loops and optional attractions add distance. Times allow for pauses and photographs, and exclude major ticketed visits, meals and long queues.
| Route | Start and finish | Approximate walking | Suggested allowance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Eastern and southeastern shore | Hubin → Yongjin Park → Orioles Singing in the Willows | 2–3 km | 1.5–2.5 hours | An easy first introduction |
| 2. Bai Causeway and Gushan | Broken Bridge → Bai Causeway → Gushan → Xiling Bridge area | 2–3 km | 1.5–2.5 hours | Classic views with a manageable walk |
| 3. Su Causeway, north to south | Quyuan Fenghe area → Su Causeway → Huagang Guanyu | 3–4 km | 2–3 hours | Travellers who enjoy a longer walk |
| 4. Western water gardens | Yuhu Bay → Wuguitan area → Maojiabu | 3–4 km | 2–3 hours | A different landscape after the classic sights |
Route 1: Hubin to the Southeastern Lakeshore
Suggested sequence: Hubin → Yongjin Park → Orioles Singing in the Willows.
Start around Hubin and follow the waterfront south. This route introduces the lake while keeping city facilities relatively close, making it a practical choice for your first morning or afternoon.
Continue towards Yongjin Park, then choose whether to carry on to Orioles Singing in the Willows. The enjoyment comes from the changing water views, trees and places to pause; there is no need to turn every park entrance into a separate attraction visit.
Finish in the southeastern lakeside area. From here, decide whether to have lunch, return to your hotel or arrange a transfer to the historic streets around Hefang Street.
Choose this route if: You want an uncomplicated introduction with a flexible stopping point.
Shorten it by: Exploring only a section of Hubin and returning to the same area for a seated break.
Avoid adding automatically: A full walk onwards to Leifeng Pagoda. It extends the outing and changes your finishing point.
Route 2: Broken Bridge, Bai Causeway and Gushan
Suggested sequence: Broken Bridge → Bai Causeway → Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake → a selected Gushan path → Xiling Bridge area.
Begin at Broken Bridge and walk west along Bai Causeway. Continue towards the Gushan, or Solitary Hill, area, stopping to enjoy the changing relationship between water, planted shore and hills.
Choose one Gushan section rather than trying to include every garden, cultural venue and hillside path. A visit to a museum or other indoor venue requires its own opening check and time allowance.
Finishing near Xiling Bridge provides a natural endpoint for this suggested walk. Check your onward transport or lunch location before extending the route around the northern shore.
Choose this route if: You want a classic West Lake walk without committing to Su Causeway as well.
Shorten it by: Walking only part of Bai Causeway and returning towards Broken Bridge.
Walking note: Keep to lakeside paths for a gentler outing. Optional climbs on Gushan add effort and are not part of the standard route.
Bai Causeway and Su Causeway are separate walks. Moving from one to the other involves additional distance; they should not be treated as two short stops beside the same entrance.
Route 3: Su Causeway From North to South
Suggested sequence: Quyuan Fenghe area → northern end of Su Causeway → walk south → Huagang Guanyu, or Viewing Fish at Flower Harbour.
Su Causeway is nearly three kilometres long, before you add the approach or time in nearby gardens. Its bridges and planted setting make it rewarding for visitors who enjoy being outdoors, but it is a more substantial walk than a brief lakeside stop.
Begin near the northern end and continue south at an unhurried pace. Take breaks before fatigue becomes the main feature of the visit. At the southern end, explore a selected part of Huagang Guanyu if you still feel comfortable walking.
Plan your onward journey from this end. A one-way walk is more practical than crossing the causeway and discovering that your return arrangements require retracing it.
Choose this route if: You enjoy a longer outdoor outing and do not mind bridge slopes or a sustained walk.
Shorten it by: Visiting a section from either end and turning back, with a smaller overall allowance.
Avoid adding automatically: Leifeng Pagoda, another large garden circuit and a walk back along the causeway. Each increases the day’s walking.
Route 4: Yuhu Bay, Wuguitan and Maojiabu
Suggested sequence: A selected Yuhu Bay loop → paths around Wuguitan → Maojiabu, using permitted paths and crossings around the western scenic area.
This route suits visitors who have time beyond the classic causeways and want a more garden-and-waterway-focused outing. It is a suggested sequence through the wider western landscape, rather than one uninterrupted promenade along the main lake.
Set your start at a specific entrance near Yuhu Bay. Check the connecting paths on a current map, follow local signs and use proper road crossings. Do not assume every waterside path connects directly to the next garden.
Finish around Maojiabu and arrange transport from a permitted location. If you want to add tea culture afterwards, confirm the transfer and appointment instead of treating a tea village as the next stop on foot.
Choose this route if: You prefer a different setting and are comfortable navigating a less straightforward sequence of paths.
Shorten it by: Visiting only Yuhu Bay or Maojiabu as a standalone outing.
For a first short visit: Choose Route 1 or Route 2 instead. This western route is optional, rather than something you need to complete before leaving Hangzhou.
Should You Walk All the Way Around West Lake?
You can plan a long circuit, but we do not recommend it as the default first visit. Hangzhou’s visitor information describes the distance around the lake as approximately 15 kilometres; your actual route varies with causeways, diversions and garden paths.
A full circuit suits visitors who specifically want an active walking day. It leaves less flexibility for a boat trip, an indoor visit, a long lunch or cultural sightseeing elsewhere.
For most travellers, a selected walk with an onward transfer gives a more comfortable introduction. Choose your route for the experience you want, rather than using a complete lap as the measure of a successful visit.
West Lake Boat Trips: Choose the Experience First
The boat’s appearance does not tell you everything about its itinerary. An island service, a sightseeing cruise and a small-boat hire can have very different ticket rules and finishing points.
Operator-supplied information published in February 2026 describes island outings to Xiaoyingzhou, a stopping lake circuit, themed sightseeing and several small-boat options. Use these categories to understand your choices; check the current product before paying.
| Your priority | What to ask for | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Walking on the island | A service including Xiaoyingzhou / Three Pools Mirroring the Moon | Island entry, onward boat arrangements and final mainland landing |
| Seeing the lake from the water | A sightseeing cruise | Duration, stops and whether it returns to the departure pier |
| Moving between lakeside areas | A stopping or point-to-point service | Whether your intended segment is operating and accepted by your ticket |
| A smaller boat for your group | A staffed rowing or sculling experience | Total charge, time calculation, route and finishing point |
| Taking the controls yourself | A permitted self-operated rental | Instructions, allowed area, return time and rental conditions |
Island Visit: Allow Time Ashore
Choose an island outing if you want to spend time walking on Xiaoyingzhou, the island associated with Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. An island ticket creates a different schedule from a ride that remains on the water.
Allow about two to three hours as a starting planning allowance for boarding, travel, a relaxed island visit and the onward boat. Crowds or a longer walk ashore can increase this.
Before booking, clarify whether your final mainland landing can differ from your departure pier. Ask which options are available on your date and how the onward boat is selected. Do not assume a ticket allows unrestricted travel between all piers.
Choose a landing near your next activity if the operator permits it. Otherwise, plan the extra transfer from the confirmed return point.
Sightseeing Cruise: Useful When You Prefer Less Walking
A sightseeing ride can suit travellers who mainly want water-level views and time seated. Check whether the service stays aboard throughout, makes stops or includes any hosted activity.
Read the specific inclusions. Tea, performances, commentary and island access should not be assumed simply because the vessel is large or decorated.
If you want English interpretation, ask whether it is provided. A culturally themed product does not automatically include an English-speaking guide.
Stopping Services: Confirm the Segment You Need
A stopping lake service can potentially help you move between sightseeing areas. Its usefulness depends on the operating stops, ticket rules and service hours.
Before relying on it, ask whether you can board at your chosen pier and get off at the intended destination. Check whether a segment ticket or another product is appropriate, and whether reboarding is allowed.
Have another way to complete your route if weather or service changes interrupt the plan. A boat is an attractive part of a day when it works; it should not be the only means of reaching a time-sensitive connection.
Small Boats: Agree on the Total Cost and Duration
For a staffed small boat, ask whether the price is per boat or per person, how long the hire lasts, and how extra time is charged. If you plan to go ashore, ask whether admission and waiting time are additional.
Explain your preferred experience before boarding: a short scenic outing, photographs or a longer ride. Confirm where you will finish.
Self-operated rentals are a separate choice. Consider whether your group is comfortable operating the boat and following the rental instructions. A seated, staffed experience may be more suitable when ease is your priority.
Night Cruises and Seasonal Products
Evening services and special events can add another perspective, but do not assume daytime products run unchanged after dark. July 2026 reporting described both island and circuit night outings; those summer arrangements are not a year-round timetable.
Confirm availability, departure point, duration, inclusions and the last return for your date. If a night outing is important to you, arrange dinner and hotel transport around the confirmed booking.
Six Questions to Ask Before Buying a Boat Ticket
- Where exactly do we board? Confirm the named pier, not just “West Lake”.
- Do we go ashore? Distinguish a passing view from an island visit.
- Where do we finish? Check whether that location suits your next stop.
- What is included? Clarify admission, onward travel and any hosted activities.
- How is the price calculated? Check group, child and extra-time conditions where relevant.
- What happens if the service changes? Read the ticket’s operating and cancellation conditions.
Leave enough time to understand the answers. A cheaper ticket is not necessarily better value if it leaves you far from your intended route.
Boat Prices, Booking and Operating Hours
There is no single West Lake boat fare. Prices depend on the product, inclusions and any relevant rental duration. Purchase through the operator’s ticket office or a clearly identified booking channel, and check the exact departure requirements.
This guide does not use a permanent price table or a universal last-departure time. The February 2026 operator-supplied notice itself notes that holiday routes and capacity can be adjusted and that weather instructions affect operations.
For a first visit, verify these details for your actual date: fare, sales closing time, last usable onward or return service, passenger conditions and weather status. Completing a purchase is not the same as confirming that a particular boat fits your schedule.
Three Practical Ways to Combine Walking and Boats
A Simple Half-Day Introduction
Start around Hubin, walk a manageable part of the eastern shore, then pause for a meal. Add a suitable sightseeing ride only if its departure, duration and return point fit your remaining time.
This is our simplest recommendation for visitors who want the lake experience without a demanding route. An island visit is optional; you can enjoy the shore and water views without it.
A Classic Walk With an Island Outing
Begin at Broken Bridge, walk Bai Causeway and explore a selected Gushan section. Then use an operating island service from a suitable pier, if available and convenient.
Before buying, confirm the final mainland landing. If you want to continue in the southern area, ask whether an appropriate landing is available. If it is not, adapt the afternoon rather than assuming the boat will take you there.
Allow a generous half day or most of a day, depending on your walk, lunch and queues. The boat should connect parts of your plan, not force extra backtracking.
A Longer Walk With a Flexible Return
Walk Su Causeway from north to south and visit a selected section of Huagang Guanyu. Finish with lunch or a seated break.
Use an appropriate road or scenic transport service for the next part of the day. Add a boat outing only if it still appeals and you have time; do not treat it as compulsory after a substantial walk.
Best Time of Day to Visit West Lake
We generally recommend the morning or late afternoon for a walking-focused visit. These windows can offer more comfortable conditions than a long exposed summer walk at midday, though they do not guarantee quiet paths.
Spring: Leave room for rain and changing conditions. Flowers and fresh growth vary with the weather.
Summer: Walk earlier, take indoor breaks and carry water. Boat boarding queues can still involve time outdoors.
Autumn: Plan for comfortable walking when conditions allow, while recognising that public holidays bring pressure on popular areas.
Winter: Wear layers and include warm indoor pauses. Do not schedule an outing around a hoped-for snowfall.
For photographs, choose your viewpoint according to the actual light. There is no universal sunset spot that will be best in every season or weather condition.
Getting to Your Starting Point and Back
Metro and Road Transport
For a city-side arrival, begin by checking connections to the Hubin area. Match the station exit and final walking route to your chosen start; being near West Lake does not mean being near every scenic entrance.
Use a specific park, bridge or permitted drop-off point for a taxi or arranged transfer. Confirm the return location before starting a one-way walk, especially if the finishing area is unfamiliar.
Buses and Scenic Services
Hangzhou’s 2025 visitor information describes loop buses as another way to see parts of the lake without continuous walking. Check current stops and operating arrangements before using them in your route.
Road buses, lakeside sightseeing vehicles and boats are different services. Do not assume that one ticket or one published route applies to all three.
Bicycles
Cycling can be considered on permitted routes, but it is not interchangeable with walking. Check signs, riding restrictions and parking requirements; do not assume you can ride through every garden, promenade or causeway section.
If navigation, rentals or crowded paths would make the outing uncomfortable, choose a shorter walk and transport instead.
West Lake With Children, Seniors or Limited Mobility
For families, choose one main route and agree on breaks before setting out. A short lake walk and a seated activity can be more enjoyable than repeatedly moving between viewpoints.
For senior travellers, think about continuous walking, bridge slopes, seating and the distance from the vehicle to the actual visit. The shortest straight-line route is not always the most comfortable.
For wheelchair users or anyone who needs step-free access, confirm the exact park entrance, path, toilet facilities and boat boarding arrangements. General descriptions of West Lake as “flat” do not establish that a particular outing is accessible.
An island visit includes walking after landing. Choosing a boat therefore does not necessarily reduce the total walking compared with a short visit on the mainland.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting without an endpoint. Decide where you want lunch or onward transport before setting off.
- Combining both causeways without checking the total walk. Include the connecting distance and garden detours.
- Buying a boat ticket by appearance alone. Read the itinerary and inclusions.
- Assuming every boat visits an island. Ask whether passengers actually go ashore.
- Relying on a sunset return without checking service hours. Confirm the last usable connection for your ticket.
- Adding a pagoda climb, island walk and long causeway outing to a limited-mobility day. Assess each activity separately.
- Treating every scenic name as a compulsory stop. Choose a few experiences and allow time to enjoy them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is West Lake Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you enjoy landscapes, gardens and time outdoors. It is also a good introduction to Hangzhou’s relationship with its surrounding hills and its cultural history. Choose a route that suits your interests; a worthwhile visit does not require seeing every famous view.
Is West Lake Free to Visit?
Public lakeside areas are generally free to enter. Boats and certain attractions or activities have separate charges. Check the specific product before paying, especially when an island visit or another admission is involved.
What Is the Best Walking Route for a First Visit?
We recommend the eastern shore for simplicity or Bai Causeway and Gushan for a classic focused walk. Su Causeway suits visitors who want a longer outing. Your hotel location, weather and walking comfort are more useful decision factors than a single “best route” for everyone.
Which Should I Choose: Bai Causeway or Su Causeway?
Choose Bai Causeway if you prefer a shorter classic outing, allowing extra time for Gushan if desired. Choose Su Causeway for a longer walk with an onward plan at the opposite end. You can visit them on different days rather than joining both into one demanding route.
Should I Take a Boat or Walk?
For most first-time visitors, a selected walk with an optional boat trip works well. Walking lets you pause and explore the shore; a boat offers another perspective. If time is limited, prioritise the walk or ride that best matches your needs instead of trying to fit in both.
Does Every West Lake Cruise Include Three Pools Mirroring the Moon?
No. Confirm whether the product includes landing on Xiaoyingzhou, passes nearby or follows a different route. The ticket description matters more than a generic “West Lake cruise” label. Ask about island admission and the final mainland landing before booking.
Can I Finish at a Different Pier From Where I Started?
This depends on your product and the operating arrangements. Ask the operator which final mainland landings your ticket permits and how you select one. Do not build a one-way sightseeing plan on the assumption that every boat or island ticket gives unrestricted pier choice.
Can I Visit West Lake in the Rain?
Light rain can suit a shorter walk with regular sheltered breaks. Heavy rain, wind or other adverse conditions can change the outing and boat operations. Keep another plan available and follow current operator instructions rather than treating a pre-purchased ticket as a guarantee of sailing.
Can I Visit West Lake and Lingyin on the Same Day?
Yes, if you keep the lake visit focused and organise the temple around its reservation and transfer needs. Avoid adding a complete lake circuit as well. For a more relaxed first stay, give the lake and historic streets one day, then combine Lingyin with tea culture on another.
Is an Island Visit Essential?
No. It is a worthwhile choice if you want time ashore and can accommodate the boat logistics. A lakeside walk and sightseeing ride can also provide a satisfying first visit. Choose the island for the experience itself, rather than feeling that you must include it to complete the lake.
