The Bund is easiest to enjoy when the walk has a clear rhythm: arrive from the city, explore the northern river junction, then follow the historic façades south. Leave time for a meal and return to the waterfront as daylight fades. The buildings and skyline deserve more than a hurried stop between other attractions.

This one-day plan begins at East Nanjing Road metro station and combines the Peace Hotel, Waibaidu Bridge, Huangpu Park and the central Bund. Lunch is an inland detour, so the route includes some retracing of steps. Use the illustrated plan to understand the sequence, then follow the open paths and local signs.

Illustrated English walking plan for Shanghai’s Bund with East Nanjing Road metro, Peace Hotel, Waibaidu Bridge, Huangpu Park, historic façades, an inland lunch detour and an evening river return

A suggested Bund walking sequence with an inland lunch detour. Illustrated plan, not to scale; adjust timings to the season and current access arrangements. Click the image to view the full-size plan.

Morning: the Peace Hotel and the northern spur

From East Nanjing Road station, walk east along the shopping street towards the Huangpu River. At the waterfront, look at the Peace Hotel’s exterior and its distinctive roof before continuing north. Visiting an operating hotel’s interiors is subject to its own access arrangements; an exterior architecture stop is enough to begin the day.

Waibaidu Bridge spans Suzhou Creek near its meeting with the Huangpu River. It gives the northern part of the walk a different setting, with steel bridgework, the river junction and views towards Pudong. Stay on pedestrian routes and keep space for people passing through the bridge area.

Continue to Huangpu Park and the Monument to the People’s Heroes, near the northern end of the Bund. Pause here before turning south along the waterfront. Morning conditions vary, but allowing time for this section keeps it from becoming an extra detour after the rest of the walk.

Late morning: historic façades and the central promenade

The riverfront gives a useful overview of the buildings along Zhongshan East 1st Road. The Customs House, with its clock tower, stands just north of the former HSBC building. Look at the rooflines, columns and façade details as well as the whole streetscape.

Around Chen Yi Square, the view opens towards Lujiazui on the opposite bank. The Oriental Pearl Tower and the cluster of tall buildings belong to Pudong across the river; they are not the next stops on the same pedestrian route. Photograph the skyline from the Bund without feeling obliged to cross immediately.

Lunch: take a deliberate inland break

East Nanjing Road, Yuanmingyuan Road and the Waitanyuan area offer places to look for a meal or coffee away from the waterfront. Choose somewhere that suits your route, budget and appetite. A lunch stop in these areas means leaving the riverside and later returning to it, rather than a perfectly continuous north-to-south walk.

Compare menus before ordering, particularly when considering a river-view table. Prices vary between a simple meal, a café break and a full restaurant lunch, so a fixed per-person figure is not a dependable budget. Leave enough time to sit down and rest before the evening section.

Afternoon: choose how far south to continue

After lunch, decide how much walking still feels comfortable. Returning directly to the central promenade works well for a relaxed visit. If you want a longer route, continue south towards East Jinling Road Pier, the Shiliupu area and the Bund Finance Center, usually shortened to BFC.

These southern additions are optional rather than essential parts of every first visit. A shorter afternoon can include a café or an indoor attraction before returning to the river. Interior visits, observation decks, exhibitions and boat experiences may have separate admission charges even when the public promenade itself is free to walk.

An optional ferry crossing

The Dongjin ferry connects East Jinling Road Pier in Puxi with Dongchang Road Pier in Pudong. It can offer a brief view from the water, but it is a transport service with queues, operating arrangements and possible temporary suspensions. Check the current operator information and pier notices before making it part of the plan.

Crossing the river changes the itinerary: you then need time for the Pudong side and a confirmed way back or an onward metro journey. If sunset on the Bund is the priority, keep the ferry optional rather than risking a rushed return. The two banks are not connected by a pedestrian bridge at this point.

Dusk: return for the changing skyline

Find a permitted waterfront position before sunset and watch the river scene change. The blue-hour transition can be as interesting as the fully illuminated skyline. Sunset varies across the year, and landscape-lighting arrangements can change for seasons, events and operational reasons.

Do not treat 17:30 or 18:30 as a fixed year-round arrival or switch-on time. Check the sunset for your date and the current official lighting notice, and leave a buffer for crowds or controlled pedestrian routes. City lighting does not guarantee a coordinated light show.

Metro access and the return journey

East Nanjing Road station is served by Lines 2 and 10. Tiantong Road, on Lines 10 and 12, is another option for approaching the northern area, while Yuyuan Garden station on Lines 10 and 14 can be useful for the old-town and southern additions. Allow for the walk between a station and the waterfront.

Check the available exits and service notices rather than relying on one numbered exit throughout the year. At busy holiday periods, nearby stations, piers and streets may have temporary closures or crowd controls. Choose the return station before the evening ends and confirm the last service you need.

Half a day, a full day or an overnight stay

For a half-day visit, keep the core sequence: Peace Hotel, Waibaidu Bridge, Huangpu Park, the historic façades and one stretch of the central waterfront. Choose daylight or dusk according to your interests rather than adding every southern stop.

With a full day, add lunch, a rest and a second visit to the river after dark. If staying overnight, Yu Garden and the City God Temple area can become a separate next-day walk, with BFC or the southern waterfront added when convenient. Yu Garden’s interior has its own admission and opening arrangements.

Comfortable shoes, water and time for pauses make a better first visit than a packed checklist. Keep the northern spur together, recognise the lunch detour and give the evening enough room. The reward is seeing historic Puxi and the modern Pudong skyline in changing light.
