Where to Stay in Hangzhou: A Guide to the Best Areas for Your Trip

Find the right base for lakeside walks, city exploring and a comfortable Hangzhou stay.

Find the right base for lakeside walks, city exploring and a comfortable Hangzhou stay.

Choosing where to stay in Hangzhou changes how you experience the city. A hotel near West Lake makes it easy to take a morning walk before breakfast. A central hotel near shops and the metro gives you more flexibility for meals and day trips. A retreat among the western hills can be a lovely place to slow down, provided you are happy to arrange transport.

For a first visit of one or two nights, we recommend starting your search around Hubin on the eastern side of West Lake, then comparing Fengqi Road and Wulin. These areas offer a practical balance between sightseeing and city convenience. If the hotel itself is an important part of your holiday, consider the northern or western lakeside and the Lingyin–Longjing area too.

The right choice depends on what you want to do, how much walking you enjoy and whether you will use public transport or private transfers. This guide compares Hangzhou’s main accommodation areas and explains what to check before booking.

West Lake, Hangzhou

West Lake, Hangzhou.

Where to Stay in Hangzhou at a Glance

The recommendations below are our planning advice. Individual hotels vary, so always check the exact address and room details.

Area Best suited to Main advantage Main trade-off
Hubin and the eastern side of West Lake First visits, short stays, sightseeing on foot Easy access to lakeside walks, meals and city amenities Busy streets; a convenient location can command a premium
Fengqi Road and Wulin Central convenience, shopping, comparing value A useful city base for varied plans The lake may be a longer walk than the listing suggests
Wushan and Hefang Street Old-city atmosphere, food and evening exploring Access to the historic streets and the southeastern lake area Pedestrian lanes, crowds and possible evening noise
Northern and western West Lake Scenic stays, couples, leisurely lake visits Landscape and lakeside atmosphere Transport and nearby dining depend closely on the property
Lingyin and Longjing Tea, temples, hills and a slower pace A setting closer to the western scenic areas More planning for city evenings and arrival transfers
Qianjiang New City Business trips, modern hotels, riverfront stays A base in Hangzhou’s modern riverside business district West Lake sightseeing requires a separate journey
Hangzhou East station area Early trains, late arrivals, a practical stopover Potentially easier railway transfers Less suited to spontaneous lakeside walks
Xixi area Wetland visits, longer stays, time at a resort A different landscape from the lake and city centre Additional travel for a classic West Lake itinerary

For most visitors, choosing a well-located hotel in one area is easier than changing hotels during a short stay.

Understand the Map Before You Book

“Near West Lake” covers several different experiences

West Lake is large, and its shores have different surroundings. The eastern side faces the busy city. The northern side includes Beishan Road and access towards the Bai Causeway and Gushan. The western side leads towards greener scenic areas, while the southeast connects with the old-city side of Hangzhou.

A hotel can reasonably describe itself as near West Lake while being inconvenient for the particular boat pier, walking route or restaurant you have in mind.

Choose a specific lakeside destination and check the route from the hotel entrance. If you want to walk by the water every morning, that route matters more than the distance to a generic “West Lake” map pin.

Xihu District does not necessarily mean lakeside

Xihu means West Lake, but Xihu District is a much broader area. An address in the district does not guarantee a short walk to the lake.

Likewise, a hotel with “West Lake” in its name may be set back from the shore. Use the actual street address when comparing properties.

A lake view and lake access are separate benefits

A room may offer a distant or partial view without being particularly convenient for walking to the water. A hotel close to a lakeside path may have no lake-facing rooms at all.

Decide which matters more to you. If paying extra for a view, confirm that the specific room category includes it, and ask whether it is full, partial or dependent on the room assigned.

1. Hubin and Eastern West Lake: Our First Choice for a Short First Visit

Choose this area if you want West Lake to be part of your everyday routine.

Hubin sits on the city-facing eastern side of the lake. It works particularly well for visitors who want a straightforward introduction to Hangzhou: walk by the water, stop for a meal, return to the hotel for a rest and head out again in the evening.

For a one- or two-night stay, this convenience can be worth paying for. You have limited time, and a location that lets you begin sightseeing on foot reduces the number of transfers you need to organise.

Why stay here?

We like this area for first-time visitors travelling independently, couples who enjoy evening walks and families who may need to return to their room during the day.

A hotel within a manageable walk of the lake and a useful metro station can give you several transport options. Longxiangqiao is a helpful landmark when assessing the eastern lakeside, but check the actual walking route and station entrance for each property.

What are the trade-offs?

This is an active urban area. A lakeside address does not guarantee a quiet room, especially near busy roads, commercial streets or evening gathering places.

Compare recent comments about noise, room condition and service. If quiet matters, ask about rooms away from the main road and entertainment areas. A room overlooking an internal courtyard may suit you better than a busier street-facing option.

What should you check?

Look at the route to the shore, nearby meals and the hotel’s vehicle entrance. A property just behind the waterfront may offer a useful compromise, but only if the walk is comfortable for your group.

Our recommendation: for a classic two-day first visit, begin with Hubin and the streets immediately behind the eastern lakeside. Compare location and room quality together before paying a premium.

2. Fengqi Road and Wulin: A Flexible Central Base

Choose this area if you want city convenience and a wider hotel comparison.

Fengqi Road and Wulin are useful search areas north of the main Hubin lakeside zone. They are not one small neighbourhood: hotel locations vary, and Wulin Square should not be confused with every listing that uses “Wulin” in its name.

This part of the city suits travellers who expect to combine lake sightseeing with shopping, meals, other neighbourhoods or onward journeys.

Why stay here?

We recommend comparing this area when a lakeside hotel costs more than you want to spend or when a central city hotel better meets your room requirements.

For a family needing two rooms, or travellers looking for particular facilities, a broader search around Fengqi Road and Wulin may reveal a better overall fit. The area is also useful if you enjoy returning from sightseeing to a city setting with shops and restaurants.

What are the trade-offs?

Some hotels are within an enjoyable walk of the lake; others are better reached by metro or taxi. Avoid treating the entire area as equally close to the waterfront.

“West Lake Cultural Square” is another place name you may encounter. It does not mean the hotel is beside West Lake’s shore. Check its location separately.

What should you check?

Compare the route to a useful metro station, the journey to your planned lake walk and the dining options near the entrance. Look for recent room photos, rather than assuming a central hotel has newer facilities.

Our recommendation: Fengqi Road and Wulin are strong alternatives to Hubin for a first visit, particularly when the room, price or transport connections work better for your group.

3. Wushan and Hefang Street: Old-City Atmosphere and Evening Exploring

Choose this area if historic streets and food are an important part of your stay.

The Wushan and Hefang Street area gives you access to Hangzhou’s old-city surroundings and the Qinghefang historic quarter. It can work well if you enjoy exploring on foot in the evening and want a stay that includes more than the lake.

The southeastern side of West Lake can also fit into your plans from this area, depending on the hotel’s precise position.

Why stay here?

We would consider it for visitors who enjoy traditional streets, small shops and a food-focused evening. It can be a useful base for combining the old city with selected lakeside walks.

Staying nearby lets you explore at a relaxed pace and return to the hotel when you have had enough of the crowds.

What are the trade-offs?

Popular pedestrian streets can be busy. A room above or close to shops may have more evening noise than you expect, while small properties can differ greatly in comfort and facilities.

Vehicle access also matters. A charming lane can become less convenient when you arrive with suitcases, a pushchair or a traveller who needs step-free access.

What should you check?

Ask where a taxi can stop, how far you must carry bags and whether there is a lift. Confirm whether your room faces a busy street and read recent reviews for sound insulation.

Our recommendation: choose a property with comfortable access near the historic quarter. Being directly on the busiest pedestrian street is only worthwhile if that setting suits your preferences.

4. Northern and Western West Lake: A More Scenic Stay

Choose this area if the landscape and hotel setting are central to your holiday.

The northern and western lakeside offer a different experience from Hubin’s city-facing shore. Beishan Road follows the northern bank, while the western side places you closer to gardens, wooded surroundings and some of the lake’s scenic walking areas.

These are broad search zones. A property on the northern shore can have very different transport and dining options from one set farther west.

Why stay here?

We would consider this area for couples, travellers celebrating an occasion and visitors who want to spend more time enjoying the lake and their accommodation.

It also suits a slower itinerary in which you have time for a morning walk, a leisurely breakfast and a return to the hotel between outings.

What are the trade-offs?

A scenic address can involve more taxi journeys or fewer immediate dining choices. Ask what is realistically accessible on foot from the property, particularly in the evening.

Road traffic near popular scenic spots can affect transfers. A short distance on the map should not be treated as a guaranteed quick drive.

What should you check?

Confirm how you reach the lakeside path, whether the approach has steps or slopes, and whether a road lies between the hotel and the water. If your choice depends on a garden, terrace or lake view, check that it is available to guests in your booked room category.

Our recommendation: choose this area deliberately for its setting. It can be a rewarding stay when the property and a slower itinerary fit together.

5. Lingyin and Longjing: Temples, Tea and Time in the Hills

Choose this area if you want to spend meaningful time in Hangzhou’s western scenic surroundings.

Lingyin and Longjing are separate places, rather than one compact hotel district. Lingyin is useful to consider for temple-focused plans, while Longjing places you closer to the tea-growing landscape. Check where each property sits in relation to the places you want to visit.

Why stay here?

We would consider this area for repeat visitors, tea enthusiasts and travellers who prefer a slower stay away from the busiest city streets.

A small guesthouse or retreat may be appealing if you enjoy spending time at the property. It can also make sense when your itinerary already concentrates on the western hills and you have arranged transport for other outings.

What are the trade-offs?

City meals and evenings may require a separate journey. For a short first visit, you may spend more time on transport if your plans alternate between the hills, Hubin and the old city.

Smaller properties need careful assessment. English support, reception hours, luggage handling and room access should be confirmed rather than assumed.

What should you check?

Ask about the final approach from the road, steps to the room, breakfast and nearby evening meals. If you will arrive late, arrange the check-in process and transport in advance.

Our recommendation: consider Lingyin or Longjing when the setting is one of your reasons for visiting Hangzhou. For a first one-night stay with a varied sightseeing plan, we would usually choose a more central base.

6. Qianjiang New City: Modern Hotels and the Riverfront

Choose this area if business, hotel facilities or the modern riverside city matter most.

Qianjiang New City is Hangzhou’s modern business district beside the Qiantang River. Its riverside surroundings offer a different view of the city from West Lake.

It can be a practical base for business travellers and for visitors who prefer a contemporary urban stay with organised sightseeing transfers.

Why stay here?

We would compare this area for a combined business and leisure trip, or when a particular hotel offers the room layout and facilities your group needs.

It may also appeal to visitors who want river views and time in modern Hangzhou alongside a separate day at the lake.

What are the trade-offs?

West Lake and the historic quarter require transport. If your main wish is to step outside for a lakeside walk, factor that into the choice.

Qianjiang New City and Qianjiang Century City are different areas on different sides of the river. Check the precise address, especially if you are attending a meeting or event.

What should you check?

Compare the route to your meeting venue, metro access and the journey to your sightseeing starting point. A river-view room should be assessed by its exact category, just as you would assess a lake-view room.

Our recommendation: choose Qianjiang New City for a reason connected to your hotel preferences, business plans or riverfront interests. For a short trip centred on West Lake, Hubin or Fengqi Road will usually fit our suggested itinerary more easily.

7. Hangzhou East Station: Useful for a Stopover

Choose this area if railway convenience is your main priority.

A hotel near Hangzhou East can be useful before an early departure or after a late arrival. It may also suit a short stop in which you need a straightforward place to sleep between journeys.

Why stay here?

We would consider it when your confirmed train times make a central sightseeing hotel less practical. It can simplify the arrival or departure part of the stay if the property has genuinely convenient access.

What are the trade-offs?

You will need transport for a lakeside visit. For two nights of sightseeing, repeated journeys may outweigh the benefit of staying near the station.

Also, “near Hangzhou East” can describe properties on different sides of a large station complex. Check the route to the appropriate entrance rather than the straight-line distance.

What should you check?

Ask whether the walk is realistic with luggage and whether a shuttle is offered at the time you need it. Confirm the station on your train ticket: Hangzhou East, Hangzhou Railway Station and Hangzhou West are separate stations.

Our recommendation: consider this area for a transport-led stopover. For a sightseeing stay, compare the central areas first and arrange a transfer to the station.

8. Xixi: A Different Kind of Hangzhou Stay

Choose this area if wetland scenery and time at your accommodation are part of the plan.

Xixi lies in western Hangzhou and has a different landscape from West Lake. It can suit visitors who want to include the wetland area and spend more time at a resort or spacious property.

Why stay here?

We would consider Xixi for a longer visit, a return trip or a family stay where the accommodation’s facilities matter as much as checking off the main sights.

What are the trade-offs?

West Lake, the old city and other central plans require separate journeys. A listing “near Xixi” also needs checking against the particular entrance or area you intend to visit.

What should you check?

Look at dining, vehicle access and the route to your chosen wetland entrance. If a pool, children’s activity or other facility is important, confirm its current availability and any age or access restrictions before booking.

Our recommendation: Xixi works best when you have time to enjoy that part of Hangzhou. For a brief first visit focused on West Lake, we suggest a more central base.

Choose an Area for Your Travel Style

First-time visitors staying one or two nights

Start with Hubin, then compare Fengqi Road and Wulin. Choose a property that makes your first lake walk and evening meal easy, with an arrival route you can manage comfortably.

For a short visit, we would usually keep one hotel throughout the stay.

Families with children

Hubin or a convenient central hotel can make rest breaks and meals easier. A resort in the western scenic areas or Xixi may suit a longer stay if you intend to use its facilities.

Check maximum room occupancy, children’s breakfast charges, extra-bed arrangements and whether connecting rooms are confirmed. A room described as “family-friendly” does not by itself establish that it fits your group.

Older travellers and visitors with limited mobility

Prioritise the hotel entrance, lift, bathroom and access to meals over the appeal of an area name. A comfortable central hotel with easy vehicle access may work better than a scenic property reached by steps.

For a lakeside stay, inspect the actual route to the water. Ask specific questions about step-free access, slopes, shower arrangements and taxi pickup.

Couples and special occasions

Compare the northern and western lake areas, or a well-located hotel near Hubin if you prefer independent evenings in the city.

Confirm the view and room condition you are paying for. A reliable, comfortable room often contributes more to the stay than a prestigious address alone.

Travellers watching their budget

Compare Fengqi Road and Wulin with properties a little behind the main lakeside streets. Look at live rates for the same dates, room conditions and cancellation terms.

Add the likely cost of transport and breakfast. A cheaper room farther away may offer less value if it creates extra daily journeys.

Business and leisure visitors

Start with your work location. Qianjiang New City may suit a riverside business schedule; another part of Hangzhou may be better for your actual venue.

Fit sightseeing around that base unless you have enough leisure nights to justify changing hotels.

Late arrivals and early departures

Use the exact railway station or airport on your booking to assess the transfer. Confirm reception hours and late check-in arrangements.

An airport hotel can make sense before an early flight, but assess it separately from your sightseeing accommodation. For a longer visit, staying centrally and moving for the final night may be worth considering; for a short visit, balance the benefit against packing and changing hotels.

What to Check Before Booking a Hangzhou Hotel

1. The exact entrance and walking route

Check the route from the entrance to the lake, a useful metro station and somewhere to eat. Map estimates need to suit your pace, luggage and the weather.

2. The specific room category

Confirm the bed arrangement, window, view and occupancy. Check whether any description applies to the hotel generally or to the room you are purchasing.

3. Recent reviews and room photographs

Look for comments about cleanliness, noise, air-conditioning, maintenance and staff assistance. Different wings or room categories in one property can have different conditions.

4. Passport check-in and guest details

Provide the correct guest information and confirm the property’s check-in process for your passport documents, especially with smaller guesthouses or apartment-style accommodation. Carry original passports for the guests who are checking in.

Ask practical questions in advance if the listing or confirmation leaves the process unclear.

5. Breakfast and nearby meals

Check what is included, the breakfast hours and charges for additional guests. For an early tour or train, ask whether breakfast will be available before you leave.

6. Vehicle access and luggage storage

Confirm the pickup point for a guide or driver. Ask about storing bags if you arrive before check-in or plan to explore after checking out.

7. Payment and cancellation conditions

Compare the full charge, deposits and payment arrangements. Read the cancellation deadline in local time and check whether the booking is refundable before committing to a fixed rate.

8. Facilities that are essential to your stay

If you need a pool, cot, connecting room, laundry service or accessible bathroom, confirm it directly. Request written confirmation for arrangements that determine whether the property will work for your group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Hangzhou for a first visit?

Our first choice is Hubin on the eastern side of West Lake for a short sightseeing stay. Fengqi Road and Wulin are useful alternatives when you prefer a particular hotel, central transport connections or a better live rate.

Should I stay beside West Lake or near a railway station?

For one or two days of sightseeing, we usually recommend a convenient central or lakeside base. A station-area hotel makes more sense when an early train, late arrival or short stopover is the main consideration.

Is Wulin Square close enough to West Lake?

It can be a practical base, but check the individual property’s walking route. Decide whether you want the lake within a short daily walk or are happy to use transport.

Is a hotel in Xihu District necessarily near West Lake?

No. The district covers a broad area. Check the exact hotel address and the route to the part of the lake you plan to visit.

Is Hefang Street a good place to stay?

It can suit visitors who enjoy the old-city atmosphere and evening exploring. Check noise, lifts and vehicle access, particularly for properties in pedestrian lanes.

Are the western hills a good base for a first trip?

They can work well if tea, temples and a scenic hotel setting are priorities and you are comfortable arranging transport. For a brief first visit with varied sightseeing, we would usually choose a more central area.

Is a lake-view room worth the extra cost?

It depends on how much time you expect to spend in the room and the view actually offered. Confirm the booked category and compare recent photos. Easy lake access may be more valuable if you plan to be out most of the day.

Should I split my stay between two areas?

For one or two nights, we recommend one base. For a longer trip, a central stay followed by a scenic retreat can make sense if you have enough time in each place to justify the move.
